Some Dreams Are Scary!

The day of our 4th session was picture-taking day at Swift! Students in Ms. Arena’s class—formerly Ms. Popovic’s (you are missed, Ms. Popovic!)—were just about to get down to the business of writing dream poems when the announcement came over the intercom for them to line up to head to the auditorium. Ms. Amato’s class returned just in time for us to have a full session together. We talked about different kinds of dreams and read “The Mysterious Sleep of Mother Whales” by Kate Hosford, before students wrote their own dream poems.

Hana F.

I had a nightmare
that I couldn’t breathe then
I got choked by a pillow
Then I woke up and
my pillow was under
my head.

Sophia H.

I had a dream that can come true.
I always dream of a series with my friends
and me as super heroes at the school playground.
Sometimes, I would think of it during the day.
I’d even sometimes ask my mom if I could.
I thought about it since a year ago.
My friends and I each had a super power.
It made me feel special.

I had a nightmare that I
was sleeping and I woke up
and I saw bugs and bees
coming in the room. And I
got off my bed and the bugs
and bees got faster then the
bugs got on my legs and feet
and the bees got on the rest of my body.
I got so scared I woke up
before the bugs sucked my
blood and before the bees stung me.

I had a nightmare. It was bad, very
bad. I was in the woods all alone I was
trembling. I heard someone say “Where
are you?” “Come play” click, click, click, click
“Come play before I make you!” and then
I heard “Hello ti ho!” then I woke up
I was breathing so heavy.
