See It, Write It

For our 7th week, Bronzeville students learned about ekphrastic poetry, or poems inspired by an image. We examined Van Gogh’s Starry Night before reading the Anne Sexton poem of the same name. Then students scrolled through an image gallery before choosing an image they felt compelled to explore. Many students were still working on their poems, but here are a few from last week’s students.

In this room I see a sword that has been used in battle all rusty and old.
I see a pot that is white and cold.
I see a statue that’s ancient and special.
I shall watch over this room until I am moved.
