Ready… Set… Rewrite!

Twain 5th graders are so close to the end of our poetry residency. For week nine, students prepared to reach the finish line. Together we read the poem “The Finish Line,” by Laura Salas. In her poem a group of poets are participating in a race. Poets burst across the finish line/legs weak/bodies sweaty/brains drained. We discussed how through editing and rewriting poems can help us reach our goals when it comes to improving our writing.

Inspired by Salas poem, students reworked and completed past poems and felt as sense of achievement. Every poem pounded out/Every stumble recovered from/Every word cheered/ Victory! Readers, check out the poems below, and get ready to run your own race to write amazing poems.

My Chips By Alvaro B.

I rip the bag, and I am sad
when I eat the whole bag.
Chips are good and my family agrees.
Here, come and see.
I like spicy, it’s really dicey.
When I go to the store, I zig zag
at the aisle when I see Takis
I go crazy.

A Rainy Day By Angel P.

On a rainy day, you get to take a nap.
You can listen to the calming rain,
as it taps on your window,
tap tap tap tap tap.
On a rainy day you can help
your mom make food.
You can play Fifa alone
or with friends.

The Rainbow Man's Father By Leo G.

He bullies me.
He should never come near.
My thoughts filled with fear.

I beg him not to stay,
I want him to go away!

He never stops drinking beer.
“No, stop, my bones I can’t take it.”
I beg him, “My bones, don’t break it.”

I am the one who sits in silence.

Poem For My Dead Brother By Luluwa Y.

I think about you every day.
I wish you were around.

I bet you had a warm smile,
don’t let the negative things
come around.

I wonder what you liked,
I hope you always shine.

Just know that I love you,
always shine bright!

I never got to play with you sadly…
Whatever you liked, I’d like too…

I know we don’t have the same taste,
but I know what you’ve been through…

Don’t worry my life is traumatizing too!
It’s silly to say, but I speak the truth …

I know you got abused to death,
abut I still love you …

Poem For Whoever Deleted My Animation In Art Class By Sofia M.

I’m coming for you.
I hope your shoe gets stuck in glue.
Ima hit with a bass.
Then Ima make you eat some grass.

The sun will be bright,
And I am night.

Ima put a bird in your mouth,
Then Ima say one word.

Sponge Bob By Emiliano O.

If I was Sponge Bob I’ll go to the Krusty Krab
to make some Krabby Patties,
to make people happy.
But humans couldn’t get my burgers
because I live under the sea, something
humans can’t see.
So, I will just feed the different animals that live
right there and I going to make some more food
for those fish to make cash.
But something humans do is throw trash.
But I’m going to give him some Burgers
In Krusty Krab.

Poem For My Mom By Gio E.

Thank you for caring about me.
And when I’m sick, you make

When I’m sad you make me happy.
And when you do that, I feel like

When my dad snores.
We go to many stores.

Some people yawn from tiredness, hiccups,

Forks scrape the plate when people eat.
Talking and whispering happens.
Someone burps after eating.
Chairs screech on the floor,
after you push them in.

The Legends By Issac O.

The Tortoise and the Hare were thought to be the greatest duo.
Now, they want to be more than just a duo, enemies!!
They have scheduled a race at 3:45pm at the mall at
Garfield Ridge, and when both of them arrive, they will have
a showdown that everyone from Garfield Ridge can visit!
Later… the Tortoise and the Hare have came for the finale,
to see who is faster!! 3 2 1 Go!

It looks like the Hare is getting lucky,
but by some miracle, the Tortoise
looks like he is catching up!

K Dramas By Alexandra M.

The weather is sunny to watch K drama.
It makes me sad when there isn’t
a happy ending.
Weak Hero Class is my favorite

It made me cry for an hour,
because my favorite character
got in a coma.
But at the end, he was alive.

Your bottle is made of plastic.
You are considered fantastic.

The label says recycle me.
Soon you’ll be free.

You are nice and purified.
Now when I drink,
I won’t be horrified.
