In their nineteenth week Hale after school 3rd-5th grade students explored the meaning of heroism. They were asked, what makes someone a hero? To figure this out we watched video clips on Tuesday of students’ favorite Disney heros and heroines such as Hercules, Ariel, and Mulan. What these characters have in common is their bravery, intelligence, kindness, and creativity.

On Wednesday we discussed everyday heros by reading the poem “My Mom is a Hero,” by Haugan Elementary 8th grader Angela L. In her poem Angela uses similes and metaphors to describe her mother. My mom is strong like Wonder Woman/ My mom is a warrior no matter what/ My mom is gold/ My mom is a lifesaver. Students discovered that heros aren’t just in movies or TV shows, but can be in our own homes and communities: parents, teachers, doctors, or crossing guards.

Inspired by Disney and Angela L’s poem, students wrote poems describing all types of unique heros and heroines.

Tom Holland (Spiderman) Jayce L.

He is as good as Tony Stark,
from Iron Man in Endgame.
He is the best actor.
He is a strong superhero.

Mrs. McMurray Evan Q.

She helps me save my math knowledge.
She is the best teacher ever.
She is more fun than a video game.
She is the best math teacher ever.

A Hero Federico R.

A hero stands up for other people.
A hero is a boy or a girl.
A hero can be tall or short.
A hero can be young or old.
A hero can have powers or not.
A hero can be anyone.
