For my 10th visit with 2nd graders at Bret Harte, we talked about things we know how to do well before the discussion turned to recipes. I began to take items from my bag: a whisk, a soup ladle, a spatula, seasonings, and a cheese grater. Students said we could make a soup or a stew, or maybe pancakes with these things. By the time I took out measuring cups and spoons, and a large pot with a lid, some students were hoping that I was going to cook something for them! “Sorry,” I said, tying on my apron, “but I’m going to make a poetry stew. Can you help me with this recipe?”
