Poetry is… | Sabin 5th Grade

This week we built upon our introductory foundation of last week’s work with simile, with our this week’s work with metaphor. We read Nikki Giovani’s poem, “Poetry”. Students thought about what poetry is to them through the use of metaphor; both asking and answering the question: What is poetry?

A metaphor describes something by saying it is something else, for example: Students are superheroes! Or: Ideas are actions!

Check out some student poetry from their work with metaphor, and find Nikki Giovanni’s poem below!

Untitled Alia

I was outside eating
Cotton candy, it felt as
Light as snow.

I was in the snow,
The snow was as cold as the air.

Poetry Is… Jazlyn

Poetry is helpful
poetry is boring
poetry is frustrating
poetry is confusing
poetry is fun
poetry is understandable.

Poetry is helpful as teachers,
poetry is as boring as school : /
poetry is as frustrating as homework
poetry is as fun as running outside.

La poesía Areli

La poesía aveces es musica.
La poesía es un lunes.
La poesía habla sobre tus emociones.
La poesía te da información.
La poesía es amorosa.
La poesía te da energía.

Untitled Mason

Poetry is all types of emotions
like love and happy, and to me
it’s kinda boring
(but that doesn’t mean nothing right now),
and cool at the same time
and hungry for you to read it
and it’s super truthful.
