Poetry is… | Sabin 4th Grade

This week we built upon our introductory foundation of last week’s work with simile, with our this week’s work with metaphor. We read Nikki Giovani’s poem, “Poetry”. Students thought about what poetry is to them through the use of metaphor; both asking and answering the question: What is poetry?

A metaphor describes something by saying it is something else, for example: Students are superheroes! Or: Ideas are actions!

Check out some student poetry from their work with metaphor, and find Nikki Giovanni’s poem below!

As nice as the heart
as calming as a song
as graceful as cool
and graceful as a song
nice as cool,
the heart is as calming as a tree.

It comes and goes where the wind blows
the shell of a bug or the body of a bird
and even the smallest tries
like a mosquito or red ant.
