Poems Written About Works of Art

Poems written about works of art, or another way to say this is ekphrastic poetry, and here’s something extra fun: the poets at Hale were also the artists! We all gathered around our semi-circle table and drew a picture of anything we wanted like a cat in a sweater, or an ambiguous not-frog that was really the Rolling Stones logo, or campfire! Everyone had to interpret the drawings and write at-minimum a 3-line poem responding to the works of art. Below are a few of the ekphrastic pieces:

5th grade

Cat Lily

It is as cute as a puppy

It is as scary as a monster

as wild as a fly

and creepy like a doll

and it is not funny like a clown

Hot Pot Lily

It is as gray as steam

and as hot as me

and as hot as a fire

4th grade

Cute Cate Ana N.

The cat is as cute as Alexcia

with whiskers as long as a crayon

The cat ears are pink like a pig

Spy Girl Anabella

Her hair is as black as dark coffee

Her pants are as green as a pond

and her eyes are as brown as chocolate cake

Greeny, Greeny Frog Ava F.

Greeny, greeny, greeny frog

you are as green as lettuce

Greeny, greeny, greeny frog

you are as slimy as slime without the activator

Greeny, greeny, greeny frog

you eat flies like the time I went to the park

and a fly went inside of my mouth.
