Poemas de Invierno/Winter Poems

For our first bilingual poetry class, Volta 4th graders read a translation of Nikki Giovanni’s “Winter Poem” and spent time thinking about their five senses and images in poems. To prepare for their own poems, they created lists of how they each experience winter though sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. They wrote about hot chocolate, mittens, Chicago wind, snow angels, and more. Thank you to Leslie Reese for creating such a great first-day writing prompt. Enjoy these poems from Volta students!

Poema de Invierno Monserrat M.

Una vez yo me comí unas
galletas y me encantaron y tomi
un vaso de leche porque soy
San Nicolas!
Vine a dejar los regalos para
los niños. Salí y había NIEVE. Miré
venados y pájaros.

One time I saw a tree without leaves.
Another time I heard a dog howling.
Another time I smelled the delicious
food that my mom was making.
Another time I tasted hot chocolate.
The last time, I touched snow.

Una vez la nieve estaba tan fría
que los arboles se quedaron sin hojas.
Una vez el viento asusto tanto
al perro con su ruido que el
perro empezo a ladrar.
Una vez olí el pan de Ecuador
que me lo imaginé comiéndolo.
Una vez comí el cuy con chocolate
caliente y estaba muy rico que
me quede dormida.

y olí la sopa caliente y vi un venado
y toque mi regalo y mi bufanda y mi ropa
y saboreé los ricos tamales y chocolate
