Poemas de Écfrasis/ Ekphrastic Poems

This week, our class talked about ekphrastic poetry. We read a poem by the youth winner of the 2021 San Antonio Museum of Art Ekphrastic Art Contest and looked at five paintings, including a couple by local artists. The students began by describing what they saw: pink dresses, bodies of water, a pair of scissors, etc. and then tried to determine what might be happening or what might happen next in each painting’s story. What excited me most was when students wrote about seeing things that I couldn’t see like crouching animals or nopales, cactus paddles, burning in a pot.
