Pantoums with South Loop Poetry Club

For the past two weeks at South Loop Poetry Club, our poets have been working hard to write pantoums! I shared an example of a pantoum I wrote, and explained the pattern of repeating lines. Even with such a perplex form, all of our poets were ready to give it a shot. After writing our own original pantoums, we even paired up to write some collaborative poems. We have so much work we’ll be dividing it into two blog posts! Please enjoy these fantastic pantoums from our poets!

A time in a city George and Mia

The traffic in the street rings in my ears
The people talking
People on the sidewalk singing
It’s snowing

Finally it is a white Christmas
The big tree being decorated
It’s snowing
The smell of cookies

The big tree being decorated
The starry night
The smell of cookies
The stocking being hanged up

The starry night
People on the sidewalk singing
The stockings being hanged up
The traffic in the street rings in my ears

Yes Cole C.

Geee that’s a yes
Ceiling is full of yes
He says yes

Geee that’s a yes
Ceiling is full of yes
He says yes

Cruisers, destroyers, carriers, battle
Torpedoes, shells flying through water and air
Shells hitting the ships blowing them through the air
Then I see it, the shell

Torpedoes flying through the water
Boom, Boom, our torpedoes hit
Then I see it, the shell
We get hit water rushes in

“Boom, Boom,” our shells hit
Ratatatata antiaircraft puts the fourth of July in the sky
We hit ’em, they crash into the water
Boom, chug, chug, BLAM a plane goes down

Ratatata antiaircraft fire puts the fourth of July in the sky
Shells hitting the ships blowing
Boom, blam, blam a plane blows up
Cruisers, destroyers, carriers, battleships

The End
they all lived happily ever after

Oliver Morgan F.

He is kind and funny and always cracks me up
He is cool he is nice and never lies
He is unknown to people but not all
The world should get to know him

He is cool he is nice and never lies
He is a great friend
The world should get to know him
Always has my back

He is a great friend
If I fall he has my back
Always has my back
He is Oliver!

If I fall he helps me up
He is unknown to people but not all
He is Oliver
He is kind and funny and always cracks
me up.

the end!

Oceans in your eyes
Rivers in your hand
Take away the sand
Morgan
Rivers in your hand
Fish make the spots on your dress
Morgan
Waterfalls of hair
Fish make the spots on your dress
Sunset smile on glistening water
Waterfalls of hair
Morgan you let me fly!
Sunset smile on glistening water
Take away the sand
Morgan you let me fly!
Oceans in your eyes

The End Navi R.

The suspense builds up
You feel someone watching
Your breathing gets heavy
Your body is overwhelmed

You feel someone’s presence
Is this the end?
Your body is scared
Your brain hurts

Is my life over?
Something bad is soon going to happen
Your brain throbs
You black out

Something bad is approaching soon
Your breathing stops
You say goodbye
The suspense builds up higher

Untitled Annabel

I get my blades on
I go outside
The air feels warm
I take a breath.

I go outside of the patio
I stay steady
I take another breath.
I start to fall but slowly get up

“Still steady” I say
My mom getting ahead of me
I slowly fall again but get up.
I feel free

My mom waiting for me.
The air feels warmer than before
I feel The End coming soon
I get my blades off.

The fallen loop of an egg Mia P.

Cupping an egg in my hands
Walking across the floor
Dirt gets between the bottom of my shoes
I hear a sound and walk around

Walking across the floor
I get entranced by the view
I hear a sound and dance around
I get too lost

I get entranced by the movements
My hands loosen up
I get too focused
The egg falls

My hands loosen once more
Dirt turns in the cracks of my shoes
The egg falls
I cup an egg in my hands.

The last stand George

The guns firing
The cruiser sailing
The ship sinking
The torpedoes in the water

The cruiser firing
The big BOOM
The torpedoes in the water again
Water splashes

The big BOOM
planes in the air
water splasher
The bomb hits

more planes in the air
more ships sinking
more bombs hit
The last gun fires.

Acorns Whitman G.

Acorns in your dreams
Hazel, brown, beautiful
Full of nature
Small, round, interesting

Hazel, brown, beautiful
Squirrels favorite snack
Small, round, interesting
Came from a tree

Squirrels favorite snack
Smells like heaven
Came from a tree
Unique in its own way

Smells like heaven
Full of nature
Unique in its own way
Acorns in your dreams
