On the day that I was born…

During our last session, we dove into our pasts, to the year we were born and beyond. Inspired by Jacqueline Woodson’s poem “February 12, 1963,” we incorporated research into our poems and imagined the lives of our grandparents and great-grandparents. We especially admired the repetition in Woodson’s poem and the way she uses short and long lines in her poem. Check out some of ours below!

When and Where I Was Born By Anthony V.

I am born on a Saturday
at a hospital in Chicago, Illinois
I am born in Chicago but
the story of Chicago runs like
blood through my veins

I was born on
August 7, 2008
My grandparents said they lived
through the Chicago Fire in October
Fire everywhere
People getting killed
Water putting down fire

The birthdate of a GOAT
I’m an acquired taste, like a root beer float
First of all, born on a Monday
Gonna be great someday
Ice Spice born in my month
Yea, I’m definitely a munch
Mama Rug born on the same day
We too fly, we don’t play

Birthday By Alexia G.

The most important day of my life
though I can’t remember it
I see it, through a bright screen

Disasters will happen
so will miracles
but two lives are entering Chicago

Alexia and Elisa twin A and B
Harry Potter, a movie of the year
thank you, 6-23-09

I am born on a Monday
in Trinity Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, USA
A country that’s across another country with
the wish to succeed.

I was born in a whole different
location where my parents would
walk miles in blistered feet just to go to
school.
