Last week, Carver students got a taste of some local poetry by way of the south side. Our time together began with a discussion about some of our favorite inside jokes or words we used among our friends. Students put me on to lots of Tiktok sounds that have become regular rotations in their vocabulary. Next, we listened to and read “On” by Nate Marshall and “Hecky Naw” by Jose Olivarez, sharing some of the standout lines and messages from each. Finally, students wrote their own poems inspired by the language most familiar to them. Check out one inspired by “On” below.
