On Thursday, we kept up our poem-writing spirits in Ms. Manning’s classroom and learned all about similes. We learned that similes are a type of figurative language that compare two things, and read Eloise V’s poem “Ode to Blue.” That poem is filled with similes, and together we noticed how the poet compares a wide range of things to each other. After spending some time practicing comparison, 4-5th grade students got the chance to create some poems of their own. Students did an awesome job with their own odes to people, places, and things that are special to them. It was a joy seeing how many students had so many great poems about who or what they treasure most. Check out a few of our poems below:

My sister is sweet like a puppy.

My sis hair is like brownies.

My sister is cute like sugar.

My sister eat candy like love.

My sister eats like a bunny.

My sister is sweet like candy.

Ode To My Grandma Prince L.

She as nice as a sweet rose and makes me smile.

She dresses as nice as my dad.

She makes food like Gordon Ramsey.

She smells like a rose.

She’s as useful as an iPhone.

She’s as light as a cloud.

Ode to Midnight Micah T.

You can be as black as the black sky.

You can be as serious as a business man,

but when I saw you, you caught my eye.

I knew you would be a perfect match.

I may not play with you some days but that doesn’t stop me from loving you.

Others may think she is just a cat but how I see you, you’re more than a cat.

You are everything.
