“O, Neptune’s stars how did you/ become so bright?”: Out of this World….Poems

Students read a student poem, listened to Robert Frost’s star-themed poem, ‘Choose Something Like A Star,’ that used personification to talk to a star before trying their hands at their own poems addressing something… bigger than themselves while using words from legendary poet/teacher Kim Addonizio’s word bank below!

Lesson Note: “We are chemically connected to all molecules on Earth. And we are atomically connected to all atoms in the universe. We are not figuratively, but literally stardust.”-Astrophysicist, Neil DeGrasse Tyson

Earth

Earth, do you
ever feel
pain?

Earth, do
you speak
to the other
planets and
the sun?

Earth, do you like
us humans?

Earth, do
you speak
to us?

Earth, you
are home.
The one
I appreciate
most.

Being A Star

How does it feel being at night so bright

What do you see
Is the moon full of cheese

What do you hear
Is it clear

Do you ever sleep at night
Because I see you in sight

How is it being famous

How I wish we could meet

Star

Do you ever get rest?

Do you explode if you
get hot?

Do you have a light
inside you?

If I touch you,
Do I get burned?

Do you ever get sick?

Do you talk?

Do you talk in
my language?

Do uo have a
family?

Untitled

Why are you yellow?
Do you see light?
Can you melt and sizzle up?

Are you like an angel?
Is all you see is the dark night sky?
Could you burn me?

How do you feel
Does smoke come out of you?
Can you get folded?

Untitled

Why are you white?
How do you see in the dark?
Do you fold?

Can you burn when you go close to the
sun?
How do you look at yourself in the
mirror?
Can you see in the light?

Untitled

Little star, do you sleep at light
or Dark. Do you smoke. Do you
use a blanket at night. Why do
you disappear at morning.

Why are you yellow. Do you
sleep at night.

Stars

Where do you go in the light?
you are as bright as the sun.

You shine over us all.
You sizzle in the dark.
do you hide in a blanket when the sun is out?

Have you ever seen a shooting star?
How bright are you?
Why don’t you shine in the sun?

Untitled

how do you breathe in space.

what year is your age

do you like Earth like me.

how does it feel to be on other planets

what is your favorite planet galaxy

Neptune's Stars

O, Neptuen’s stars how did you
become so bright?

You’re like the light in the
big dark night sky

Are you everywhere?

Like a blanket on the dark
sky?

Do you go around Neptune
every night?

Do you like the night sky or
floating like an angel all
over the night sky?

Do you burn because you
are so bright?
