Not home, not yet

Spring is here, which means summer isn’t too far behind. Last week, Waters 7th graders pondered things to look forward to (big and small) before reading Rita Dove’s vacation. After discussing the astute people watching in the poem, students wrote about the things they look forward to in the months and weeks ahead. Take a look and enjoy!

Baseball Alex L.

Baseball my favorite time of the year
When I can hit a home run
And strike out kids when I pitch
Run around the bases first second and third
then steal home with the score on the line
Pitch fastball curveball changeup and more
This is baseball competitive and fun
with a team of 12 kids and 9 on the field
Stepping on the field dirt for the first time is ages
Is like a comforting dome where nothing can harm you
This is baseball

Boxes Penny M.

cold gray vinyl floors
blank walls
boxes of furniture
boxes of belongings
the smell of paint
blank and lingering
no rugs
no furniture
not home
not yet

Now it has become 4 years since we got you
4 years since you were born
2 years since you got bitten
1 years since you finally liked me
95 days until your birthday
95 days until you become 4 years old

Six Flags Simon A.

You walk to the gate
and your mouth shines with happiness
and you’re excited like a puppy reuniting wit its owner
the towering orange structure makes you
scared like a kid with a nightmare
You wait in the hot burning sun.
and you’re impatient like a kid on the night before Christmas
As the rollercoaster clicks to the top,
your hands start to shiver
as nervous as a student before an exam
You reach the top
then you drop,
bursting with laughter
hopeful, that you will see another day.
