Night Poems

Inspired by a few poems from seventh and eighth graders at Haines taught by Timothy David Rey, eighth graders at Washington wrote poems about their nighttime thoughts and experiences, focusing on tone. We loved the way the example poems made nighttime seem creepy, stressful, cozy, or relaxing, depending on word choice and wrote our own poems accordingly!

Bluebirds By Summer M. and Sarina H.

10:30 at night, peek out
my window as the wind
flows through the curtains
and lets the
breezy air tickle my skin,
looking at the night sky
reminds me of
a beautiful
bluebird

Nightmare By Andrew P. and Angel T.

Wind blowing the trees
banging against the window
floor creaking nobody’s there
but I imagine a scary figure standing there

Body shaking with fear
dripping sweat
making my blankets damp
shivering with coldness
decide to sleep

I wake up
more relaxed

Nighttime Boredom By Paul G.

I am playing a game on my computer. Or I lay down playing my 3DS. I make a snack and eat it. I sit at the computer trying to learn more. I pace around and just think. I try to call some friends who are still up. I study a broken headset and see if there is anything else wrong with it. Or I just sit there thinking about what happened during the day. I get bored. I see the time or I am just bored enough to decide it’s time to go to sleep. I brush my teeth. Maybe drink some water. Maybe make another snack. Then turn off all the lights and go to sleep. Except I toss sand turn for several hours. I finally fall asleep and wake up in the middle of the night. I cannot go back to sleep and toss and turn for awhile and once I start to drift to sleep my alarm sounds and repeat.

Nights By Jazmin M. and Samantha R.

The boring silent night
is what keeps us awake
Our thoughts fill the room
Conversing with oneself
our eyes close
as we drift asleep

Darkness By Eric A. and Alex K.

An empty chalkboard
ready to be drawn on
by your imagination

Eyes close
dreams fill the board
background music
playing in mind

A feeling of peace
a smell of dried sheets
an empty chalkboard

Night By Juan Camilo M.

Near my bed the cold
thick window letting noise in
skinny stray cats walking
cry for food and shelter
screeches out of nowhere

Nighttime and Daytime By Ayanna Z. and Kameron F.

dark and cozy
sleepy and nice
eyes heavy
owls hooting
sun goes down
I sleep.

I wake
sun rising
birds chirping
thinking how to start my day
calm and bright.

The Dark Night By Alyssa G.

The moon and stars are covered in blankets of clouds
The wind softly snoring through the air
The lack of light in my cozy cold room
The only light coming from my eyes that stare up at the ceiling
The time when everyone is sleeping gives me time to think
Surrounded by fuzzy blankets, pillows, and my thoughts
I think of today, tomorrow, the next day, and the day after
I think of the people I love with each one of their warm loving faces flashing through my head
I think of things I want to do and plan them out
I think of things that confuse me and try to understand
My thoughts leak into my dreams while I’m fast sleep in the dark night

Night By Niko K.

In my room
no one around
dark, quiet, tired
ready to sleep
but then
something starts
to scratch at my door
creak!
The door slowly opens
