My Name…

For Week 1 of the poetry residency, the wonderful students at Hale Elementary School analyzed the powers of their own names — where do names come from and what do names mean? Some students had names that could be traced down from the bible. Other students had names that honored family members like great grandmas. On Monday, we decided to make a collaborative poem since names are communal nouns we share among one another. On Wednesday, everyone made their own individual “my name” poems. Here are a few selections:

4th-5th grade

My name... Ava, Ava, Olivia, Liliana, Alexcia, Milania, and Anabella

My name means flower

but it is not a flower.

My name can be too long

because it has seven letters.

My name comes from a city

in the bible.

It means bird.

My name is bright and welcoming.

It means an olive tree.

It means a flamingo.

My name comes from my parents.

It is a pretty good name.

4th grade

My name... Anabella

My name comes

from my parents.

It means sky. Cielo.

I like how my name

has an N and and I

and an S like a succulent.
