Midnight rain and other sounds

For our 6th week of poetry, Twain 5th graders explored sound effects in poetry. Poets often use Onomatopoeia, words that imitate sounds from everyday life to emphasis the images and actions occurring in a poem. Students mentioned loving birds chirp, keyboards tapping, and ring tones on phones. I showed students a video clip of one of my favorite sounds, the roaring waterfall at the Garden of the Phoenix located near the Museum of Science & Industry.

Together we read the poem, “Soda Sounds,” by former Shoesmith Elementary 6th grader Iyanna W. Inspired by Iyanna W., In her poem Iyanna describes her favorite drink strawberry soda using onomatopoeia. The soda bottle flip BOINGS and FLOPS on the table/ when shaking the soda bottle it sounds like maracas SHK SHK SHK.

Inspired by Iyanna’s poem, 5th graders wrote poems describing some of their favorite sounds. Enjoy these loud and noisy poems below.

Midnight Rain Arabella G.

Rain drops run down my window
as I look to the swaying trees.

I can barely see the moon
through the stormy clouds.

I can hear the rain trickle
and hit the glass on my window.

I feel calm as I fall asleep
to the midnight rain.

Am I Done For? by Benjamin M.

I hear growling, roaring.
I hide near the table,
while my family is in
the basement.

I asked if the sounds
were good, while my
family screams TORNADO!

I stay calm then it passed
really fast.

I heard the birds chirping.

My Cat Meows by Armani Z.

Meow!
My cat meowing at me
for not giving her food.

Click, Click,
the sound of my cat
walking.

She meows outside my door.
Meow, meow, screeching!

Meow, Meow,
She hurt herself.

Meow, Meow,
She’s looking for me.

Bubbles by Lily A.

I see bubbles pop in the air.
So colorful and they go
up, up, up.

Swoosh in the air go the bubbles.
They are big and small in my backyard.

Pop, Pop, Pop, it sounds like
popcorn popping.

Missing Piece by Julian D.

The guitar and the loud lyrics.
The 808 drums in the background.
The humming, the deep voice.

I have several missing pieces,
This song is one them.

When I hear the song,
I feel lovely.

Sounds by Hamdan S.

My favorite sounds:

A lion’s roar,
It meows and roars fill
me with power.

The wind’s swish fills
me with speed.

I love the bark of
a wolf.

Nature Sounds by Mia R.

I smell the rain dripping on
the window and see
the leaves getting stepped on
CRUNCH CHURCH CHUNCH.

Then I listen to my favorite
song, “Let Go,” and it’s so
calming.

Then I hear the WOOSH
from the pond next to my house,
it sounds like a car driving past
you and getting soaked.

My Cat, Canelo by Emily C.

His meow sounds like a normal
meow, just when he sees food or treats.
His meow sounds like
a baby crying.

Whenever he is scratching
his scratching post, it sounds
like a raspy sound or clicking
on a keyboard, or sometimes
it can sound like fire.

When he is eating his food,
I can hear crunching, smacking,
“nom, nom,” noises.

to tell their answer.

food and won’t leave you alone.

The Wind is My Friend by Arantza P.

I walk in the park as the wind
goes swoosh, swish, shh as it
whispers in my ear, “You are my
friend.”

I sit by a tree as the wind goes
HOWL! like a wolf snuggling
against me.

I lay in the grass as the wind
ROARS in my face telling me
its happy.

I head back home as the wind
leads me with a push, a swish,
and a swish keeping me safe.

I lay on my bed at night with
my window open as the wind
goes WOO-WOO wishing me
a goodnight sleep.

The wind is my friend.

The wind is my safety.

School Sounds by Angelique S.

The school bell rings DING! RING!
Sounding like an alarm clock waking me up.

The school students running
TIP! TAP! Sounding like a
stampede of wild animals.

Kids talking and yelling
BLAH! BLAH! Sounding
like my mom on the phone
with her friend.

Book pages flipping
FLIP! SWISH!
Sounding like a breeze.

The chalk scarping against
the board SCARPE!
Sounding like a screetch.

Fire and Water by Donovan D.

Fire sounds like a volcano.
Fire goes SWOOSH, SNAP, SHHH.
Fire is from branches, matches
and rocks.

Water sounds like a snake.
Water goes Drip Drop, Slurp
and swoosh.
Water is from a waterfall,
a boiling pot and lake.

Bunny by Krystian K.

When my cat walks outside it
goes  Swoosh Swoosh like
the wind.

Twenty minutes later I hear
a Squeak, Squeak and see a
small bunny.

My mom said, “Its scared,”
so loud like Blah Blah,
but I opened the balcony
and my mom screamed.

We tried to get him like
Zoom, Zoom.
We let the bunny outside.
The end.

All About the Ocean by Isabella S.

The ocean makes sounds
like swish, swish, like
the ssssss of a pan making
food.

And the ocean is so pretty,
I love the sounds of the ocean.
I go to the ocean all the time
to hear the sounds.

It’s blue as the sky.
I go visit the ocean
with my mom.

Party Sounds by Janelle M.

Everyone at a party laughs,
it always sounds like HAHA.
At least you can hear it clearly.

Sometimes people drop stuff
and makes a CRASH.

At the party you always
go SWOOH, SWOOSH
back and forth.

People talk about work
and other parties.
But if you’re really bored
to hear them it always turns
into BLAH BLAH.

Or when they want to say
something to the other person
they always whisper but
sometimes you can hear them.

Sometimes if you have a pet,
you can sometimes hear them
MEOW or WOOF in the other room.

A Night In the Minecraft Museum By Grace M.

It is night in Minecraft.

A Zombie groans as the
Thunk thunk-thunk of
me mining fill the cave.

A sudden boom!
The floor sinks 5 blocks.

The shik-shik-shik
of mining dirt.

I get out the cave.
An arrow hits my head.
I take off my sword.
A fierce battle.

There’s a ding each time XP hits me.

The sun starts to rise.
A burning sound as
mobs get burnt.
A oinks.

I am safe.
