Making Sense

Sometimes young poets have a hard time using descriptive language in poems. After reading “Natures Way” by Heidi Campbell the poets studied the use of the 5 senses in the poem. Using the 5 senses is one easy way to use descriptive language in literature. The poets were asked to describe a scene in their life by only using the 5 senses. Enjoy!

4th of July in Pilsen by Sophia

The smell of carne asada cooking on the grill and Kool-Aid floats all around the block
The sound of children, parents, and Mexican music fills the street with joy
I can see children running through the closed off street jumping in the bouncy house and on their bikes
Just having fun.
I can taste a paleta melting in my mouth
I can feel the wind blowing across my face

Flowers by Yarel and Valentin

The look of ambrea blue petals
The smell of natural nature
The touch of the pretty stems
The sound of calmness rustles in the field
The beautiful insects tasting the sweet nectar

Summer by Damian and Christian

The taste of the frozen drink as I hold it in my hand
It’s so hot I can’t stand

The sound of the birds chirping in the tree

The site of the animals wandering around
The smell of the flowers in the ground
