Ludicrous Limericks that make 5th & 6th graders laugh

For our 7th week of poetry, 5th and 6th graders found their sense of humor through limericks. A limerick is a humorous verse of three long and two short lines with a a/a/b/b/a rhyme scheme. For each line there is an 8/8/5/5/8 syllable count to create a bouncy musical rhythm.

Together we read the limerick “Johnny Is So Scared of a Ghost,” by Jalen M. who was a six grader at Shoesmith almost two years ago. In the limerick a boy named Johnny is afraid of a ghost that lives in his house.

Johnny is so scared of a ghost.
The ghost is friendlier than most.
The ghost cooks and cleans.
The ghost is not mean.
But, Johnny is still scared of ghosts.

Limericks usually end in ironic and silly unexpected ways. For Johnny, despite the ghost being friendly and helping with household chores, he is still scared of ghosts. Inspired by Jalen M. students wrote their own limericks. Please enjoy these hilarious poems.

Leah Loves to Go Swimming K'Michelle B.

Leah is such a great swimmer.

Leah is very much slimmer.

She saw a big whale.

It had a big tail.

She put in a pot to simmer.

Liam is afraid of a wolf. Journie C.

Liam is afraid of a wolf.

Tries to talk, but only goes woof.

Liam bites meat too.

The wolf only chews.

Liam is such a silly goof.

Jack and the Basketball Makayla B.

Jack is feeling scared of a fall.

He is scared of playing basketball.

He wants to play game.

But his shot is lame.

Gives it his all and the ball falls.

Don't Blame the Ice Kylie H.

Anne likes to skate on the cold ice.

She thinks she has some skating spice.

So, the big ice breaks.

Then she starts to shake.

She gets out and says, “That’s not nice.”

Joe Rode a Boat Leelah H.

Joe took a trip on a big boat.

Joe had bought a really long rope.

He pulled a big fish.

The fish was a pitch.

Joe rowed and rowed and rowed his boat.

There was a nice girl named Jaray.

She rhymed up and knew she could slay.

Baddie knows she’s a 10.

She talked it to win.

She knows she could get some green pay.

My brother and the boat Madison H.

My brother saw one of his coats.

Then my brother saw a cool boat.

So, he grabbed a book.

Then he saw a hook.

Then my brother started to float.

Peter is so scared of big rats.

The rat is meaner than all cats.

The rat bites and fights.

He has a tall height.

So, Peter becomes friends with rats.

Azuri is scared of the door.

Her mom is honking the car horn.

Autumn is terrified of bees.

The bees like to eat and smell feet.

Bees love to waste time.

And eat some green limes.

The bees left to hide in the trees.
