“Like This and Like That”

Similes and metaphors are some of the most used literary devices in poetry and literature. They help the reader relate and measure the extent of the writers’ visual depiction in the poem. The poets from Ms. Pannells’ 5th grade class read two poems “Dreams” and “Harlem” by legendary poet Langston Hughes. They identified the similes and metaphors in these poems which inspired them to write some of their own. Enjoy!

Sisters by Camila C.

They dress as if there were fashion designers
When I see my sisters, they smell like tulips
They are both tall as trees

They are teddy bears because they make me feel safe
They are calculators because they are intelligent
They are stars because they always shine bright to look in a positive way.

My Family by Giancarlos V.

My dad is as fast as a race car.
My brother plays as fast as a gamer.
My mom smells like an air freshener.
I’m cute and little like a guinea pig.

My dog is an athlete because he runs super fast.
My brother is a dog because he is super messy.
My little brother is a boxer because he hits super hard.
My mom is a calculator because she can add super fast.

Untitled by Lisette A.

Cotton Candy is as soft as a cloud.
It’s as sweet as a sugar pool.
It can be colorful like a rainbow.
It tastes like heaven and light as a leaf.

My mom is a chancla goddess.
My friend Camila is a very smart calculator.
The sun is lava.
The snow is as freezer.

Untitled by Ke'era B.

You are as cute as a panda in the prettiest woods
You are as strong as a brown bear and black bear combined
You are as smart as the Chromebook computer that is in the future
You are as tall as a redwood tree.

You are a bear cub with cute eyes
You are a redwood tree that stands up tall and never gives up
You are google with many smart choices
You are a cat that can jump high to the stars and very far

Untitled by Angel G.

You are as radiant as a blooming tulip
You are like a shining sky
You are as charming as a sparkling diamond
You are like a delicate perfume

You are a beautiful firework with so many colors
Your love is a shining star bright and beautiful
You are a butterfly charming and radiant
You are a diamond shining and sparkly

Untitled by Zayda Z.

You are as kind as a dog
You are as fast as cheetahs
You are funny as a clown
You are as pretty as a princess

You are a star
You are a flower
You are a clown because you are so funny
You are a freezer because you are so cool
