‘…like police crossing tape’: Working with Simile

We explored simile in Michael Ondaaje’s poem, Sweet Like A Crow. We also talked about using epigraphs and dedications in verse. Students created poems in praise of someone or something!

Lesson Note: Students played the Pictionary-style game, ‘Draw That Simile’ to get their creative wheels turning. Incorporating creative play in the daily work of writing, gets us using Right and Left Brain activity to ignite Flow.

day and night were mixed together making a cool, smooth
feeling in your body.

Your smile as bright as the sun
can light up a room like a light bulb in the living room.
When your smile fades, it’s like the sun being covered by clouds
and the world darkens.
When you laugh, you sound like an angel playing a harp.

When you get upset, it feels as if the sky is gonna fall,
just like a rocketship when it’s coming back down to the
