Let’s Make Some Noise

This week for their ninth after school poetry session 3rd-5th graders at Hale became noisemakers! Students were introduced to onomatopoeia, words in poetry that imitate sounds from people and objects. On Tuesday we read the poem, “At The Fireworks,” by Kelly Roper. In her poem Roper uses onomatopoeia words to create sound effects, which makes the reader feel as if they are watching fireworks during the Fourth Of July. Whoosh…Boom!/ Sizzle, sizzle, sizzle./Oh! Ah! Ooo! Together we wrote a class poem describing the different sounds we hear at Hale Elementary.

On Wednesday we learned to play basketball, by reading the poem “Dribbling,” by Kwame Alexander. In his poem Alexander uses onomatopoeia to describe the speaker, a young boy who plays this intense sport. SWOOP into the finish with a fierce finger roll/ straight in the hole / Swooooooosh.

Students were excited to use onomatopoeia to describe some of their favorite hobbies. Turn up the volume to listen to these noisy poems and artwork.
