Keep A Poem In Your Pocket

Hale Elementary 3rd-5th grade poets have made it to their twenty-third and last week of poetry club. Just like in our previous blog post we continued to celebrate the month of April. Not only is April National Poetry Month, but this year on April 28 is National Poem In Your Pocket Day. We celebrated early on Tuesday by reading the poem, “Keep A Poem In Your Pocket,” by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers. In her poem Regniers describes the wonderful benefits of carrying a poem in your pocket.

Keep a poem in your pocket
And a picture in your head
And you’ll never feel lonely
At night when you’re in bed.
The little poem will sing to you
The little picture bring to you
A dozen dreams to dance to you
At night when you’re in bed.

Inspired by Regniers, students picked names out of a bag and secretly wrote pocket poems for one of their classmates. On Thursday we exchanged our poems with our special “pocket person.” Below are special pictures and poems from Hale Elementary that you can keep in your pocket to remember our amazing year together.
