Imagery at Swift

My 6th sessions with Swift 2nd and 3rd graders landed on the week of parent-teacher conferences, and just on the cusp of spring break.  I decided to ask students to draw instead of write, as an introduction to the concept of IMAGERY.  We talked about images, pictures, and portraits, and how poets and other creative writers use words to help us see images with our mind’s eye. I had pre-selected and typed short poems or excerpts from longer poems which I cut into strips. Each student selected a strip without knowing the words that were written on the other side. Using colored pencils, markers, and crayons, young artists created these images and more from words of poets. Enjoy!
