If I were an animal…

In Ms. Carteno’s 6th grade class, we read Ada Limon’s “How to Triumph like a Girl” and discussed how through using the metaphor of a horse, the poem told us something new about the speaker. We talked about our own personalities and how there are parts of us not everyone sees. We wrote poems that used animal metaphors to give a glimpse into who we are and what we care about! The students did an excellent job!

Snow Leopard Viktoria S

I want to be a snow leopard, because

they live in the mountains up high in the cold snow, the peace as

the snow falls to the ground.

When they look you in the eyes, they make you nervous as if they

know something you don’t.

But then they also seem as calm as a single feather.

Their beautiful eyes have so much emotion it’s almost like they’re

hiding something on purpose, as if no one would understand

if they told the truth.

They sometimes seem lonely, sad, and alone. As if they’re trying

to find a way out of their misery.

They seem as if they’re looking for something.

But can’t seem to find it.

Sloth Genesis R

I feel like a sloth calm and still when I can I want to stay still.

And like a sloth lazy and silent, I always make time for being sleepy.

Sometimes I feel like a sloth, I just want a little nap.

Caterpillar Grace P

Every day a caterpillar wakes up and has a new passion. They walk around and explore their world like the only one there, the only one there. The next day they wake up and feel stronger happier more life-like and excited for the next day to come. They wake up the next day and they are now a beautiful butterfly with a passion and a responsibility! I feel very close with caterpillars and one day I will be a strong responsible butterfly!

Cheetah Poem Sebastian S

Swift on my paws

and my long slender legs.

Not a sound to be heard

but the racing of my heart.

I glide through the savannah,

past the zebra and the buffalo.

As quick as I am,

not even the Eagle can catch me.

My enemy is the Lion,

my allies are my brethren.

My prey be the Gazelle

and my home the wide open spaces.

I am the Wind,

cunning and swift.

I Am the Cheetah.

Forever may I be.

Owl

When I think of an owl, I feel like they have a special personality. An owl and I will feel peaceful, calm & silent. An owl and I will have respect for others if they show respect back. But, if we get no respect, we will stand fierce, strong, and get ready to spread our wings and take on the disrespect. But, at the end of the day, we rest our wings and wait for another beautiful tomorrow.

Pigeon Daniel S

I’m like a pigeon.

They explore a lot.

You can find them

almost anywhere and everywhere.

They are quite intelligent birds

and kinda quiet.

Butterfly Diana M

Sometimes we just want to disappear

and fly away traveling around town

looking at people’s neat, nice

lawns and admiring beautiful

nature, sleeping on a nice

light colorful flower.
