I Am A Metaphor

For the six week of Hale Elementary’s after school poetry, 3rd-5th graders had fun with metaphors. Metaphors involve comparisons between unlike things using words such as am, is, or are. On Tuesday we read the poem “Words Are Our Lives,” by Jonah C, a sixth grader from Shoesmith Elementary. In his poem Jonah wrote about the power of words by comparing words to different things. Words are a world undiscovered/Words are magic; they are magically make us feel good or bad.” One Hale student mentioned how people have to be careful when using certain words because words can hurt someone’s feelings or even brighten someone’s day.

On Wednesday we read the poem “I Am,” by Qishu Hu, a teen featured in the poetry anthology “Paint Me Like I Am” In Qishu’s poem she describes herself using metaphors, comparing herself to many things. I am the little fire in the grasslands/I am the Golden Gate bridge standing in the bay.”

This week students wrote their own individual poems describing themselves using silly, strange, and fantastic metaphors. Please enjoy these poems and self-portraits drawn by students as their metaphors.
