I Am…

Metaphors allow us to show the parts of ourselves that are not obvious to others. After reading “The Delight Song of Tsoai-talee” by N. Scott Momaday, the 7th and 8th graders of Waters asked themselves what is beneath their surface. Upon exploring what metaphors were, students then created their own based on their personalities, interests, and talents. Profound, fun, serious, and silly, students reflected on what becoming animals, foods, ideas, and objects said about their inner selves.

Poetry Reda S.

I am the fish in the sea

I am the snowflake in a snow storm

I am the girl who came to be

I am the food in a food buffet

I am the rain drop in a storm

I am the page in a book

Purple Finn M.

I am an owl of the starry sky

I am the moss on a rotten tree stump

the 15 on a D20

I am a centipede under a rock

I am the botched lines in a drawing that make it unique

I am the skull of a mammal,

the mandibles of bugs.

I am a raven in a murder of crows,

a pigeon in a flock of doves,

the rat among the mice

I am the moth that comes out when the butterflies leave

I am the green and blue of the fish’s scales

Who's Me Theda S.

I’m the thoughts that fill your mind.

I’m the reason we came.

I am a flame that won’t burn out

I am a wave that takes you down.

I am a rainbow in a sea of blue.

I am the rope that pulls me down.

I am the dream I want to be.

I am the words that dance with you

I am the recycling in your trash.

I am the wind that always comes back.

I am the wish that didn’t come true

I am the girl I am because of you.
