“I Am…”

Hello, dear reader!

Last week was my first week with Carver’s students and they greeted me with a warm poetry welcome. As an introduction, we began the session with a quick warm-up involving some shouting to get our vocal cords going. Next, we collectively set some group agreements about how we hope to share space together. Students emphasized the importance of respecting each other’s work and being kind to themselves during the writing process. To close us out, students wrote “I Am” poems and treated the class to a mini open mic. Check out of of the poems written below:

I Am La'Soda T.

I am a kiwi ’cause my attitude is sweet and sour

I am a spoon because some people can’t handle me

I am a lion ’cause I’m undefeated

I am funny but have a sweet and sour attitude

I am more like a turtle when the bell rings

I’m so crazy in love just like Beyonce

I’m so bright like the sky

But can be dark as a cloud

I can be loud as a crowd.
