Hot Chip as Metaphor

Later in the week at Dulles, the 4th graders had some fun with metaphor! We read, “Words are Birds” by Francisco X. Alarcón, and discussed some of the ways in which the speaker feels that words are like birds. We started to make some metaphors together, and I noticed that the students really felt passionately about hot chips, so I encouraged them to write poems about how hot chips make them feel, and to use some metaphors to raise the stakes!

Ice cream makes me fly
into the sky
Ice cream makes me happy.
Ice cream feels comfortable in my bed.
Ice cream makes me feel
where I belong and feel if
