“Hold Fast to Your Dreams”

During our second week of after-school poetry at Mark Twain Elementary, Mr. Barr’s 5th–7th grade students read “Dreams” by Langston Hughes and learned about the use of imagery in poetry.

From there, our talented young poets had the opportunity to write about their own dreams while practicing how to use imagery to bring their words to life.

Check out Aylin, Ezra, and Sofia’s poems!

Purple and Pink Aylin

Purple and pink are my dreams.

There’s unicorns singing my song.

I count my sheep. My friends wake me up and it was a purple color.

People look up and people looking down. It was the pink and purple milky way. It was my dream.

Me reading a book, the book was hugging me. It felt like my puppy.

It’s a dream.

My Dreams Ezra

My dreams are to see the stars with Arely.

I hope they come true.

I want to go to college and the will be Purdue.

Though my dreams complete myself,

I see the Milky Way so beautiful.

My dad never went, but when I go

I will take him.

Those are my dreams.

A Feeling So Tart Sofia

Something no one ever talks about

An emotion always thrown out

Art.

A feeling so tart

Almost always thrown out

A cancelled out noise

It brings poise.

Through the veins of my shallow heart

A color blocked out

I imagine feeling every emotion like this.

Every color combined to create black.

That’s what art is.

It’s ugly, bland.

It’s a lacing in my drink

Because it really makes you think

“Am I bad?”

‘Cept there’s no answer for that

Because I believe morality is also art.

All of our problems stem from art

It radiates back at you

Because we are art.

We are bitter.

We are our own lacing in our drinks

We make ourselves think

It’ll make you think back

It’ll make you feel black.

Because I am color blocked out

The messy desk

And the feeling so start

A feeling so tart
