“Having Fun With Rhymes!” Virtual Poetry Lesson #2

For our second Virtual Poetry Lesson we found round sound in rhyming and timing. For the 2nd graders of Swift Elementary School I shared Shel Silverstein’s poem “Dirty Face,” made of seven “rhyming couplets” all over the place! I explained that rhyming couplets are two lines that go together like a couple, with rhyming words at the end of each line. For example, in Shel Silverstein’s poem, a child explains how he came to have such a dirty face this way: “I got it from ice cream and wrestling and tears And from having more fun than you’ve had in years.” Students were encouraged to come up with words that rhymed, and then to try their hand at creating a poem of one or several rhyming couplets.
