Have You Heard the Sounds?

For our 3rd sessions, Swift 2nd and 3rd graders moved from last week’s exploration of all the senses, to zoom in on the sense of sound. After reading and discussing the poem “What Do You Hear In The City” – written by Apara S. when she was a 2nd grader at Swift – I challenged students to brainstorm sounds that were different from “birds chirping” and “dogs barking.”  In addition to using words associated with hearing such as sound, hear, heard, listen, and ear, students employed other sensory words to write their Sound Poems.

"I Love When My Dad Hums" Ishan B.

When my dad hums
it sounds like good music

it makes me feel like
how do you do that?

I ask him how to do it
and he teaches me

he teaches me how to
improvise

it sounds like my dad
is trying to calm me down with soft music

Untitled Gabriela G.

When my sister is in the room
yelling
at my brother or me
in my brain I want to giggle
because when she’s mad it makes me laugh.

when I am outside I hear bees
buzzing in the summer going from
flower to flower.

When I am at school I hear
a lot of  water bottles falling down from a table
and it makes a boom sound.
