Food Poems

During our second week at Washington, Miss Davis’s eighth graders read “gum” by student poet Eleanor M., pointing out the details and imagery that made the poem strong. We wrote our own food-inspired poems thinking about the best foods we’ve ever tasted, that remind us of good times or our family members.

Chicken Wings Leah C.

A smell of spicy peppers fills my nose
It feels like a spark of a match fire when I take a bite
But makes my mouth water when it’s in my sight
This flavor will always know how to cheer me up

Twizzlers Leslie S.

The strawberry taste
while chewing
the feeling of the
twisted candy in your
mouth
Ripping it apart to
have more pieces
Chewing and chewing
until it’s mushy in your
mouth

Chicken Soup Alexia G.

A sick day means low appetite
Cold shivers whisper through me
My throat can barely stand breaths
A warm spoon touches my tongue
Suddenly my shivers are no more
Hot soup rushes down my throat

As I swallow, the warmth glides
My full heat is restored once again
The noodles are soft and chewy
Potatoes are the perfect level of tender

Fried Chicken Salvador G.

Chicken is the color of gold
If I saw it anywhere it would be sold
I just love the amazing seasoning
I admit I love it with no reasoning
The taste of chicken is heaven
When I see it I scream like Home Alone‘s Kevin!
I love chicken, I have no excuse
I’m not going to lie, I would wear them as shoes
I admire it like an audience to a dance of ribbons
I very much love chicken.

Pancakes Juan Camilo M.-G.

Waking up to the smell of the sticky syrup
The softness making you feel
as if you never got out of bed
Pouring the syrup as it drips
down like a waterfall

Once you take a bite
Happiness is all you feel

Tamales Emilio M.

Tamales
smell like home
smell like family
Tamales
come in green or red
like Christmas dinner when I’m well fed
Green like the color of the tree
Red like my heart when I’m with my family
Tamales are wrapped in husk and stuffed with meat
When I start eating tamales I don’t leave my seat
Unwrapping the husk is like opening a gift
A Christmas present when your spirits lift
Tamales have a warm place in my heart
Me and tamales can’t be taken apart.

Chicken Alfredo Joshua F.

I see the dish glowing
The heat of the dish feels powerful
reminds me of the desert

The creaminess of the sauce
the vertical soft noodles
green vibrant color from the broccoli
including the warm roasted chicken

as I swirl the noodles
and stab the chicken with my metal fork

Flaming Hot Cheetos Elisa G.

Taste hot and good
Burns my mouth
Is really crunchy!
Very red that it stains your fingers
What am I eating

Taste of Summer Joel M.

Summer for me is
a tropical cup of boba
feels like taking a stroll
through Chinatown on a sunny
day it reminds me of
an awesome evening with friends.
