First This Happened, Then This, But Before That

This week the young Viking writers explored biographic and semi-autobiographic writing. We read Warsan Shire’s “Backwards” and discussed narrative, tension, voice, and repetition. They randomly pulled “vintage” photos from a pile and brainstormed about the lives of the photographed. They proceeded to write a poem inspired by Shire’s that operated forwards and backwards. I’m so proud of their continued admirable creativity and willingness to write every week.

Is Bucky still collecting sticks? I hope he is okay.
I don’t like homes; they smell like ashes and popcorn.
Can Bucky come back? He’s my only family.
Ma is gone; she went into the light.
Can we rewind time when everything was just “fine.”
Keith smells bad, mostly when it hurts you.
I hate liquor: it makes my Dad into a meanie and I don’t like mean people.
Can we go back in time, I miss Memaw and Papaw.
I don’t like cars, that’s how people die.
I may be broken but I am alive: I am the one who made it.

What do I tell them when they ask? Tommy C.

What do I tell them when they ask?
Have fun on your first day.
You don’t have to tell them about us, just try to
remember that
they probably wouldn’t understand us.
Yes, you may talk to the other kids about their parents, but
you shouldn’t ask if any of their mothers have wives.
We’re sorry to put one of these rules on you honey, but
we have to do this to make sure we don’t lose each other.

It’s the Class of ’47 Senior Prom.
Our first lick of freedom since the war.
Lulu hides a flask under her dress.
Boys with red lipstuck smudged on their cheeks.
We can’t wait to ditch this dance,
head to our signature booth,
be a little less serious.

She Said, "I do." Caden S.R.

She said, “I do.”
Head to toe, dressed with the stars
as perfection.
She walked down the aisle.
The same way as her flowergirl and groomsmen
at the dainty stairs.
The grass is cut freshly for the newlyweds.
At the house we once dreamt of.
As I watched from a distance.
