Do you love sour pickles?

Valentines Day landed on my most recent sessions with Swift 2nd graders, so we read Eloise Greenfield’s poem, “Honey, I Love.” Students enjoyed lines in which the poet said she LOVED “a flying pool” – referring to getting wet in water from a hose in the summertime; and when she wrote about loving the warmth of her mother’s arm; as well as loving going for a family ride. They also noticed that the poem had lines that rhymed. Students thought about things they love and things they DON’T love, and wrote those inside and outside of heart drawings.
