“Crystal skies, spring comes” Haiku with South Loop Poetry Club

In honor of our last week of Black History Month with South Loop Poetry Club, we read a selection of haiku from Richard Wright to begin our unit on Poetic Forms, starting with haiku. We talked about the purpose of rules in forms and how haiku in particular make a singular picture, and about traditional subjects of nature and beauty, such as the changing seasons we are currently going through. After doing some syllable practice, our poets came up with their own original haiku and shared with the class. We also had some free writes at the end. Please enjoy our poetry!

Nature Zachary G.

Beautiful Heaven

Mountains trees streams
grass and fields

Nature is coolness

The Ocean Navi R.

As the waves passed by
I felt the ocean breeze on me
It was so calming

Like art of the world
A happy place to always come to
My own forever home

A time to relax
The wind makes me want to fly
The ocean is mine

Spring into summer Annabel G.

Summer is coming.
Wind blowing me away.
I hear the breeze sway.

Summer is coming.
I see the pretty flowers bloom.
Flowers fill the room

Summer is coming
Bugs are here to pollinate
Summer is coming

Nighttime Whitman G.

Moon is very bright
I hear wolves howling near me
I feel free

:-D, Yes Cole C.

I’m happy as a bear
everything is beautiful as nature, yes
The birds chirping, yes
Wind breezing the air, yes

It’s peaceful around me, yes
Squirrels fleeing in their trees, yes
animals with their sons

the breeze blows as heaven
the tree leaves making peaceful sounds
dandelions spreading their seeds.

Lily Mia P.

Fields full of lillies
I take a smell with delight
before it turns to night.
They stand out at night.
In the daytime they
flourish
Winter, they crumble
Summer they bloom again
But the moral is…
Winter through Summer…
Lilies always pop back up.

Me Whitman G.

I am a good boy
I eat my greens and burp often
I am a good boy

Bugs Morgan F.

Bugs are cool, so cool /
They start their life very small /
Bugs should be loved. Yes!

Springtime Oliver G.

Tall oak trees cover
a clear glass bird flutters over
crystal skies, spring comes.

mixed galaxy Oliver G.

9 minutes time is ticking
the stars align this is not fine
our galaxy is mixing like a bowl
of salad Mars is broccoli and we are
tomatoes, more-easily smashed.
