“crackly” and “crunchy”
For my second meeting with Swift 2nd graders, we discussed things we experience using our sense(s) of sight, taste, smell, sound, and touch. We also talked about the seasons, and some of the changes in the natural world that mark different times of year; for instance, the delicate blossoms on trees in spring which turn thick and green in summer, then, multi-colored and crisp-textured in fall, to bare brown limbs in winter. We had fun sniffing the fresh rosemary, mint, dried orange peel, and dried rose petals that I brought in to awaken our sense of smell. Finally, we read two seasonal poems – “Autumn” by Raymundo Garcia Hernandez, and “In Summer” by an anonymous poet – before brainstorming ideas for our own poems. Unfortunately, many students were out sick in Ms. Brist’s class and we didn’t meet but I look forward to re-joining them next week.
