“can you end wars?” (translated from the Ukranian) & “so bright but so dark” : Star Poems

Students read a student poem that used personification to talk to a star before trying their hands at their own poems addressing something… bigger than themselves while using words from legendary poet/teacher Kim Addonizio’s word bank below!

Mirror
Smoke
Angel
Sizzle
Burn
Blanket
Fold
Dark
Light

Lesson Note: “We are chemically connected to all molecules on Earth. And we are atomically connected to all atoms in the universe. We are not figuratively, but literally stardust.”-Astrophysicist, Neil DeGrasse Tyson

Stars

Only stars know if there is life
Only stars know how it feels to be on fire
Only stars know why they’re looking at us
Only stars know if they sleep together
But all we know if that the stars are life

Untitled

You kind of sizzle in the dark
You’re so big I can see your
light
You burn my eyes
You’re like a big angel.

Untitled

You fly in the sky like angels
Is it dar up there
Would my hand burn if it touched
you. Where do you send my
wish when you’re shooting.

Star

What is your name
Is it dark or light up there
_____________________________
What multiverse are you in
Are you hot or cold
____________________________
Do you eat
Are your friends with an Angel

Bright Star

Oh, bright star
What have you seen?
Many years have passed
With your everlasting burn.
Oh, bright star
What’s your name?
What’s your story?
Do you have life?

Oh, bright star
Do you feel
Your bright light
Your quiet sizzle
What have you heard
In the big,
dark, abyss.

Untitled

Good evening, Star
What is your real name
Will you disappear one day?
Are you my friend or enemy?

Untitled

Is it great out there in space?
Does a black hole exist?
Can you end wars?

The Court

I see the spotlight
Sizzle in my eye.
When I’m on the
Basketball court
my world turns
light.
The Dark Fades
away
It folds like a
Blanket

I look in the mirror
I see my future
The smoke from
the sides of the
Court
The fans screaming
my name.
The Darkness burns
away.
An Angel arises
Then the Court grew
Dark
And on the Court I fade
away

The spotlight
Fades
It has gone
away.
See you another
day.
Even though
you have gone
away.

Light Cannot Exist Without Dark

Why do exist, mirror?
Why won’t you die, angel?
What do you seek, light?
What do you fear, dark?
Who will destroy you, light?
The universe is mine.

Untitled

Is it cold in space?
Is the space nice?

Stars

Bright gleaming stars light up the night’s sky
But what do they see?
Do they see astronauts as invaders or friends?
Do we exist to them
Do they eat, sleep, talk, love?

(Star)

What does it feel like to be up so high
like an angel in the sky
But why are you so far away
You light up my night
So bright but so dark
You are that little spark
