Can Poetry Take Care of Us?

In Ms. Carteno’s class, we read “Red Brocade” by Naomi Shihab-Nye and discussed whether or not we thought a poem could take care of a person. We wrote our own poems of welcome and care.

Ms. Carteno Class 2

My Mom Solangie

I would take her out and just have me and her time.
We will sing Spanish songs together.
We will eat ice cream and just watch a movie together.
We will make cake together.
I will make sure I tell her I love her.
I will just be there for her.
I will make sure she is healthy and she is happy.

Babysitting Crazy Twins Sebastian

I have to take good care
of these very,
annoying twins.
They jump like monkeys,
very smart monkeys,
They’re tall 9 year olds who hate vegetables,
giving them carrot soup or yellow tomatoes is hard,
and when I gave them the gifts they apologized
and said “we’re sorry and very much appreciate what you did for us.”
That’s when I felt I was taking good care and went to sleep.
