Can Poetry Take Care of Us?

In Ms. Robinson-Sanchez’s class, we read “Red Brocade” by Naomi Shihab-Nye and discussed whether or not we thought a poem could take care of a person. Most of us thought it could! We wrote our own poems of welcome and care.

My Best Friend Ivan

Hello! and welcome to my home
What would you like?
Food? Drinks? Oh you want soup?
What kind? Dinosaur soup? Ok I will
go make that right away! Here’s
some iced tea to keep you
waiting and here’s some Legos.
Goodbye! Come again sometime!

expecting anyone but come in. Here’s a
blanket in case you’re cold. No, its
fine! Take it, I don’t mind. My house
is your house! Why don’t we watch
a movie? I don’t have anything to do
anyways, here’s the remote, wow! You have good
taste! I have a good idea! I can braid your
hair! Oh well, it was nice seeing you. Bye bye!
