Build Yourself A Metaphor

Happy Friday, dear readers! Hale’s 6-8th grade poetry club had a blast this week diving deeper into figurative language. We spent our time together focused on metaphors and what makes them so important in poetic language. On Tuesday, students read Chen Chen’s “Self-Portrait as So Much Potential” and pondered what it could possibly mean to be “an arctic attic.” Students did some brainstorming on some of the people, places, and things nearest and dearest to them, then wrote their own self-portrait poems with metaphorical language. On Wednesday, we continued our metaphor practice with found poems. After browsing books for a few minutes, students built a list of captivating words, using them to create interesting metaphors in their new poems. We ended our week with a lively open mic where students shared their writing for the week.

Check out this poem by our eighth grade student Bee comparing themselves to a flower.

Self-Portrait - Bee Is A Flower Bee V.

I am a flower

Soft petals

I am delicate

Precious and fragile and lovely

It is easy to break me

I can wither away

But I can also be brought back to life

Unlike a flower

I am kind and light hearted

Always to be taken for granted

Being outside brings me serenity and serendipity

Serendipity

I would like to think I am happy and beneficial

Always making people smile and feel safe

Tulips, Roses, Peonies,Carnations, Sunflowers, Daisies,

Dahlia, Marigolds, Hibiscus, Lavender, Lilac, Buttercups

and so many more

But I am just me

Bee the flower
