Build Yourself A Metaphor

Happy Friday, dear readers! Hale’s 6-8th grade poetry club had a blast this week diving deeper into figurative language. We spent our time together focused on metaphors and what makes them so important in poetic language. On Tuesday, students read Chen Chen’s “Self-Portrait as So Much Potential” and pondered what it could possibly mean to be “an arctic attic.” Students did some brainstorming on some of the people, places, and things nearest and dearest to them, then wrote their own self-portrait poems with metaphorical language. On Wednesday, we continued our metaphor practice with found poems. After browsing books for a few minutes, students built a list of captivating words, using them to create interesting metaphors in their new poems. We ended our week with a lively open mic where students shared their writing for the week.
