“blue is a welcoming sky”

For our 6th sessions Twain 3rd graders turned their attention to using sensory details to describe color. Our key term was METAPHOR, and we practiced removing the words “like” and “as” from similes to see what kinds of phrases were left. Our example poem was “The Color White” written by Ka’layla D., a fourth grader from another school. As we read the poem we looked for clues that the poet used their senses (- seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching; as well as feelings/emotions -) to paint the color white using words. We worked together to connect our senses to the color blue before students selected colors to brainstorm and write first drafts of poems.
