Another World (5th)

Today, we read “Another Planet” by Dunya Mikhail and discussed the personification and similes that she used to help create this new world for the reader. (This lesson was adapted from a lesson by Joy Young). We especially loved the lines “the weapons sleep/beneath the dust.” The students had some very interesting interpretations of many of the lines and we loved wondering together about the lines “the war/has left its ‘r’ behind.” They wrote their own poems about another world, and I wish I could live in the worlds they imagined!

I invite you into my world!
A world where…
it feels like sleeping with a kitten
as soft as a kitten
my world is as wild as a kitten too!
My world is carefree, prancing in the warm wind
where it feels like the sun is always sshining.
Friends are always free to hang.
A world where
electronics don’t “ruin” your eyesight
no bad side to things.
Plastic is decomposable.
Welcome to my world!

Special Ticket Mohammed

I have a special
ticket to another
planet
wars no more
the guns sleep
under the ground.
The people’s bellies
are full as melons,
the trees are smiling
at the people.
The world is as peaceful
as cats.
Danger says
Goodbye.
Money is no more.
