Animal Meditation

When we silence our mind and look closely at something, we can better describe it in detail. Inspired by reading “Jelly-Fish” by Marianne Moore, the 7th and 8th graders of Waters chose a favorite wild animal to meditate on. After reflecting on the impact of imagery on a reader, students wrote poems not only describing their chosen animal but sharing what this animal teaches them about themselves. From flies to sharks to lizards to imaginary animals, students looked with intention at the animal kingdom.

Ms. Hernandez (7th Grade)

Sea Lions Leila C.

A woosh swims past you

circles back around

A small face peeks.

A smaller one grabs hold

and

is towed along for the ride.

She ducks into the plants

and swims up to the beach

She crawls on and flops in the warm sun.

Her fun ripples and she

lets you touch her

as soft and cool as velvet.

She gives a cry,

and falls asleep on the beach.

American Horse Matthew A.

The American horse can fly it has

wings as long as a giraffe’s head

it flies in the sky like an eagle

it has razor sharp teeth like

a shark the color of the horse

is the USA flag.

A Fly Roberto M.

Buzzing

more itchy

red bump, more flies

unbearable

as I go home

itchy as can be.

Hunting, camouflaging

Living, dying

Loving, aweing humans

by just existing

Ms. Hernandez (8th Grade)

Sharks Keira W.

The predator of the ocean

one that can’t haunt your dreams if you even look at it

big or small it doesn’t matter

A reputation that scares you to look at

but are sharks really bad?

they’re just an aquatic animal anyways

What makes them scary?

It’s not the size of them

or all their teeth & speed

It’s the act they come out of nowhere

they’re so mysterious you could be playfully surfing

one minute and the next see a shark which destroys

everything in its path

But only everyone knows is the stereotypical great white

and 1 in a million situations

If you take a deeper look

they’re simply just another animal trying to survive

the dangers of the water.

BEWARE on the beach Brennon H.

A clear gluttonous object lays in the

sand. It’s almost see through and has no eyes.

It looks like jelly.

You may wanna touch it, but

BEWARE

Its tentacles are like razor cutting across the sun.

It’s a jelly fish.

Its head is a complex computer made of jelly.

BEWARE

It’s a jelly fish.

so when you see it in the sand,

BEWARE and stay away

Lizzard Clark A.

Lizards act with passion

I hear them run through foliage

long scaly tail

Hits the grass

of huddled exposures

I hear

I hear

I hear it run

Leopardo Nicoll M.

Tan rapido como el viento

pero letal como un mar en tormenta

parece lindo pues su esponjoso pelaje

lo hace ver muy lindo como un

pequeño y adorable peluche pero no es

confundas pues esa criatura tan linda

por fuera te podría comer en menos

de lo que canta un gallo puesto

que sus grandes colmillos como una

mata de coco podrían acabar puestos

en ti sin que te des cuenta, su

pelaje amarillo avezes naranjiso
