A New Challenger Has Entered the Arena

This week we discussed the epic. We read “The Leaving” by Brigit Pegeen Kelly and brainstormed about what we’ve achieved and what we want to accomplish in the future. During the free write the students were asked to write about something they have done or want to do that feels epic in their own opinion. I’m delighted to publish two wonderful poems below.

Learning How to Play the Guitar Jeff A.

Pluck, pluck, pluck
the sounds of a guitar,
sounds of a total amateur:
sound that would make people rather
put on their headphones.

A major, F major, e minor,
the sound of someone who is confident,
sound that would make people listen in.

Simplicity of Flowers Dom H.

My Mom has always
been my number one.
I will never be able
to repay her for all she’s done.
I dream of buying
her a car
in her favorite color,
but I’m broke.
So I asked
her for help.
Together we made
my resume and job application.
The first thing I bought
with my check
was yellow flowers.
