6th Grade Concrete Poetry

For our third poetry lesson, we focused on concrete (visual) poetry. This form of poetry is where the words on the page form the shape of the thing that the poem is about. After reading a poem in the shape of a tree by Padma Venkatraman and a poem in the shape of a cat pawprint by Gemma Lovewell, we talked about visual ways we express ourselves and how we can do that on the page. Students were encouraged to be creative with their poems and think out of the box. They were also encouraged to choose their favorite foods! Here is what the 6th graders came up with!
