5th & 6th graders get into shape with poetry

For their fourteenth week of poetry 5th and 6th graders learned how to be creative with Concrete Poetry. A concrete poem sometimes called “shape” poetry, is when words are arranged on the page to create an image that looks like the subject of the poem.

Together we read the “Steam,” a concrete poem by Sabrina Guo a thirteen year old girl who was the 2019 1st place winner in Stone Soup Magazine’s Concrete Poetry Contest. Guo’s entire poem is shaped like a mug of tea, with words curling like steam. On winter days when her house is cold, she shares tea with her mother. This ritual of sipping tea with her mother gives her comfort and relaxation, allowing her to focus on her thoughts, dreams, and imagination.

Inspired by Sabrina Guo, students created their own concrete poems, using unique shapes to reflect significant moments in their own daily lives.
