Like you I want the world to be a better place…

Today we introduced the concept of the list poem. Which is exactly what it sounds like! We read Pat Mora’s “To Do List” a silly poem about a student who imagines their perfect weekend, complete with lots of [potato chips and rock star dreams. We talked different poetic forms, like haikus, sonnets and tankas, and added list poems to that list.

After School, and after some chicken wings, we read Roque Dalton’s “Like You” and had a great discussion about how we are connected to the world around us. Our experiences may often leave us feeling as if if we’re alone, but if you look around, there’s so many people with the same feelings, challenges and triumphs that you have.

Enjoy this week’s poets!

English Class: List Poems

On Friday

Susana P.

On Friday I’ll sleep in after completing my obligations.

I’ll hang out with my friends and go on adventures.

On Saturday morning, you’ll cath me sleeping in a little

extra to catch up on sleep I’ve missed throughout the week.

During my Saturday afternoon I’ll spend a chill afternoon

with my boyfriend. We’ll treat ourselves to face, lips, masks etc.

I’ll stall on some chores throughout the weekend but

make sure to have time for a deep clean. Sunday I’ll

prep for the upcoming week and even get my laundry

done. While I prep for a new week I’ll daydream

of forest preserves, and nature, to help time pass by while hoping

to get back to my own guilty pleasure of avoiding the

world and sleeping in.

List

Jairo R.

  1. On Monday I’ll wake up knowing I have a long wek ahead of me.
  2. I’ll be dead silent in the car, listening to the radio station my mom has on, but not one word comes out of me.
  3. With my eyes barely being able to open, I manage to push through. We laugh as we’re eating our lunch. Games of blackjack until lunch ends.
  4. Later on that day I’ll hop on the game with my friends and we tell each other how our days went, since we attend different schools.
  5. Friday arrives and I realize how time goes by fast when you’re having fun.
  6. Later that day ,me and my group of friends go to the park and play soccer. We go to Chelly’s and enjoy the rest of the day
  7. Saturday, I wake up as late as possible and play video games with my friends.
  8. Afternoon, me and my family go out and eat and we enjoy the rest of our day.
  9. Sunday, I have a soccer game and I’m really excited.
  10. I get ready for bed, ready for school knowing I’m going to feel like I felt last Monday,
